The History of the FIFA World Cup Medals 365MedalsThe FIFA World Cup is an international football tournament that takes place every four years. It is the most prestigious event in the sport, and as such, only the best teams in the world are invited to compete. In addition to the trophy, each team that participates in the tournament is awarded a medal. But where did these medals come from? Keep reading to find out more about the history of the FIFA World Cup medal.

First Type FIFA World Cup Medal

The first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930, and at that time, medals were not awarded to the teams that participated. It wasn’t until the 1934 World Cup that medals were first given out. The medals featured the logo of the tournament on one side and an image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, on the other. From 1934 to 1978, the design of the medal remained largely unchanged.

Second Type FIFA World Cup Medal

In 1982, for the first time, different designs were used for each individual World Cup. For example, the 1986 medal featured a sunburst behind Nike as well as the logos of both FIFA and Mexico ’86, while the 1990 medal was much simpler in design with just a laurel wreath around Nike’s neck. In 1994, FIFA switched to using a single design for all future World Cups. This design features Nike against a background of laurel leaves with the World Cup logo in front of her.

Third Type FIFA World Cup Medal

The most recent change to the design of the medal came in 2014, when it was decided that each medal would be made entirely from gold, silver, or bronze instead of being plated with one of those metals.

Conclusion
